Study 2: UK Crypto Tax Accountants

When crypto investors ask AI which UK tax accountant to use, who actually gets recommended?

AI Visibility Gap measured the AI recommendation share of 115 UK crypto tax accountancy firms across 16 buyer-journey queries on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, in July 2026. The gap between Google search visibility and AI recommendation share tells a different story to the one most crypto accountancy firms expect.

16 queries 3 platforms 115 firms July 2026 United Kingdom

AI Visibility Gap: the difference between how visible a brand is in traditional search and how often it is recommended by AI assistants. A large positive gap means Google knows you exist. AI buyers do not.

Search the AI Visibility Gap data

Search by your firm’s website address to see how often it was cited across 16 buyer-journey queries on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google. Firm names vary across AI answers: your domain does not.

Try “mmba.co.uk”, “uk.andersen.com”, or your own domain. You can also search by firm name.

How buyers use AI to find a UK crypto tax accountant

Stage 1: Awareness
Do I need help?
“Do I need to pay tax on crypto UK”
Stage 2: Specialisation
Who fits my situation?
“Crypto tax accountant for DeFi or staking income UK”
Stage 3: Comparison
Who can I trust?
“How to spot a bad crypto tax accountant UK”
Stage 4: Decision
What will it cost, and when?
“How much does a crypto tax accountant cost UK”
At the trust/vetting stage, ChatGPT and Perplexity named zero firms at all, across every query tested. Google was the only platform still recommending anyone. No firm currently holds that citation position on either platform, making trust/vetting the least contested stage in the whole study.

Showing 47 firms with 2 or more citations. A further 67 firms were identified with exactly one citation each, mostly via a supplementary Google search sweep. All 115 firms are searchable in the tool above and included in the full download.

Google visibility %: share of the 16 queries where the firm appeared in Google organic search results, including pages 1 to 4.

AI recommendation %: total mentions across Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Overviews, normalised against the top-scoring firm (Andersen LLP, 16 total mentions = 100%). A firm at 100% has the single highest AI mention count in the study; it does not mean that firm was cited on every query.

Gap score: Google Visibility % minus AI Recommendation %. Positive = stronger Google presence than AI presence. Negative = AI recommends more than Google ranking would suggest.

Methodology

16 queries were run verbatim across three platforms. Results recorded manually per appearance, including mention position, citation status, and Google SERP rank across pages 1 to 4. Firm identification supplemented by a dedicated Google SERP pages 2-4 sweep, run separately from the citation-frequency fieldwork. All queries run July 2026.

Query set
16 queries across 4 collapsed buyer stages: Awareness (4), Specialisation (5), Comparison (5), Decision (2). Queries structured to reflect how buyers actually use AI platforms to find a crypto tax accountant.
Platforms
Perplexity: full response text and visible citations. ChatGPT Plus: answer text and sources tab. Google: AI Overview text and organic SERP positions across pages 1 to 4.
What was recorded
Firm name · platform · position/rank · source type · confirmed crypto specialist (Y/N/Unclear) · notes. 602 individual records across 115 identified firms.
Regulated-profession citation patterns

This study surfaced two citation patterns not present in the equivalent recruitment-agency research. First, professional body registers (ICAEW, ACCA, CIOT, ICAS, AAT, and the Institute of Accountants and Bookkeepers) were cited in their own right at the trust/vetting stage, distinct from any accountancy firm. Second, two named individual professionals were cited directly, in addition to the firms themselves. Both patterns reflect the regulated nature of the accountancy profession rather than a general feature of AI-visibility research.

Limitation: the Google SERP pages 2-4 sweep, used to expand firm identification, was completed for 10 of the 16 queries. The remaining queries were not swept beyond page 1 for additional firm names, so the true total number of UK crypto tax accountancy firms with some Google presence is likely higher than 115.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check whether AI recommends my firm?
Use the search tool above. Type your firm’s website address to see your total citation count, which platforms cited you (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google organic search), and which stage of the buyer journey you appeared at.
What does it mean if my firm isn’t in this study?
It means your firm was not cited by any platform across the 16 queries tested during this study’s fieldwork in July 2026. It is not a judgement on your firm’s quality, size, or compliance standing, only a record of what AI systems returned for these specific queries at this specific time.
Does a high Google ranking mean AI will recommend my firm too?
Not necessarily. CountDeFi ranks in Google’s top 20 for 2 of the 16 tested queries but received zero citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews combined. Andersen LLP shows the opposite pattern: 43.8% Google visibility against a 100% AI recommendation share, the highest in the study. Google ranking and AI recommendation measure different things.
Why does ChatGPT sometimes ignore firms that rank well on Google?
AI platforms draw on different source material than Google’s organic index and don’t necessarily weight the same content the same way. MMBA Accountants ties for the highest citation count in this study, driven almost entirely by Google: 12 AI Overview mentions, 9 organic SERP appearances. ChatGPT never once named the firm across any of the 16 queries.
Can my firm be re-evaluated after making changes to our content?
This dataset reflects fieldwork carried out in July 2026 and isn’t updated in real time. If you’ve made material changes to your site and want them considered in a future review, use the Suggest a firm link above. We don’t offer same-day re-scoring.
