AI Visibility Gap Research
Most companies ranking in Google are invisible when buyers ask AI for recommendations.
AI Visibility Gap measures which companies AI platforms recommend, which sources shape those recommendations, and which firms are missing from buyer shortlists entirely.
We track this across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity, using the same structured buyer-conversation method for every study.
Unlike traditional SEO tools that measure rankings, AI Visibility Gap measures whether organisations are actually recommended by AI systems during real buying conversations.
AI Visibility Gap: the difference between how visible a brand is in traditional search and how often it is recommended by AI assistants. A large positive gap means Google knows you exist. AI buyers do not.
AI Recommendation Share: the proportion of AI-generated recommendations received by a company within a market or buying category.
What is AI visibility
Buyers increasingly ask Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models to research suppliers, compare providers, and suggest who to shortlist. Search Engine Optimisation still matters, but it answers a different question, whether a page ranks, not whether an AI assistant recommends the company behind it. We call the second one AI recommendation visibility: how often, and how prominently, an organisation shows up when a buyer asks an AI platform a genuine commercial question.
That visibility depends less on a company's own website than most people expect. AI platforms lean on entity recognition, structured data, and a small number of trusted third-party sources, review sites, directories, press coverage, to decide who to name. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the emerging discipline built around understanding and improving those signals, sitting alongside SEO rather than replacing it.
How we measure AI Visibility
Each study follows the same repeatable benchmark methodology.
- Standardised buyer prompts
- Multiple AI platforms
- Multiple buying scenarios
- Recorded responses
- Recommendation frequency
- Recommendation share
- Citation analysis
- Comparative scoring
Every company is assessed using the same process, allowing AI recommendation visibility to be measured, benchmarked and monitored over time.
